Australian aluminium extruder Capral Aluminium has taken the next step in the evolution of its LocAl® lower-carbon aluminium range, releasing independently verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) that provide customers with transparent, internationally recognised environmental performance data.
Since launching LocAl® in 2022, Capral has helped customers reduce the embodied carbon of their projects by providing Australian-extruded lower-carbon aluminium backed by an ASI-certified supply chain. Today, as sustainability expectations rapidly evolve across industries, Capral is building on that foundation by providing the documentation that architects, designers, builders, and specifiers increasingly need to support responsible procurement and embodied carbon reporting.
The publication of product-specific EPDs marks an important milestone for the LocAl® brand, reinforcing Capral’s commitment to transparency, accountability and evidence-based sustainability.
“As an industry, we’ve reached a point where customers quite rightly expect more than broad sustainability claims,” said Kellie Moore, Marketing Manager at Capral Aluminium. “They want independently verified information they can confidently use in project specifications, Green Star submissions and embodied carbon reporting. Our new EPDs provide exactly that.”
Prepared in accordance with internationally recognised ISO 14025 and EN 15804 standards and published through The International EPD® System, the new declarations provide independently verified lifecycle assessment data covering the cradle-to-gate (A1-A3) environmental impacts of Capral’s LocAl® and LocAl® SG extrusion ranges.
For architects and specifiers, this means access to credible environmental information that can support material selection on projects where sustainability outcomes are becoming increasingly important.
“Across the built environment and other key industrial industries, we’re seeing a significant shift,” Moore said.
“Architects, developers and manufacturers are being asked to measure and report embodied carbon with far greater accuracy than ever before. Whether they’re pursuing Green Star certification, responding to government procurement requirements or meeting their own ESG commitments, reliable product data has become essential.”
Recent changes to sustainability reporting requirements and increasing adoption of embodied carbon assessment tools are driving greater demand for Environmental Product Declarations across Australia’s construction sector. Rather than relying on generic industry assumptions, project teams can use product-specific EPDs to make more informed material selections.
For Capral, the release of the EPDs represents the natural evolution of the LocAl® brand.
“When we introduced LocAl®, our goal was to give Australian manufacturers and builders a practical way to reduce embodied carbon without compromising quality, performance or local supply,” Moore said. “That hasn’t changed. What has changed is the market’s maturity. Sustainability conversations have evolved from asking whether a product is lower carbon to asking for the evidence behind those claims.”
The introduction of independently verified EPDs reflects Capral’s long-standing philosophy of supporting customers with trusted technical information alongside high-quality Australian manufacturing. “We want our customers to have confidence not only in the aluminium they’re purchasing, but also in the environmental information that supports it,” Moore said.
“Transparency builds trust. By making independently verified lifecycle data available, we’re giving architects, manufacturers and specifiers the confidence to make informed decisions knowing the information has been assessed against internationally recognised standards.”
The release also strengthens Capral’s broader sustainability offering, complementing the company’s Australian-made manufacturing, Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) certification, and Declare labelling to provide customers with multiple layers of environmental transparency.
As sustainability expectations continue to evolve, Capral believes independently verified product information will become increasingly important across the Australian construction industry.
“Our role isn’t simply to manufacture aluminium extrusions,” Moore said.“It’s to help our customers build better projects. Providing trusted, transparent environmental information is part of that commitment, and we see this as another important step in supporting the future of Australian manufacturing and sustainable construction.”
Capral’s LocAl® and LocAl® SG Environmental Product Declarations are now available through EPD Australasia and the Capral website, providing architects, designers, engineers and specifiers with independently verified lifecycle environmental information to support responsible material selection and embodied carbon reporting.
